Old School Birthday Cake

I think we’ve all had an old school birthday cake like this and if you haven't here's your chance. It’s very simple but always a winner in our house and I'd say across the whole country. The best way to describe it is, like the old school iced cake you'd have gotten at school with custard. Only this is filled with jam and sweet mock cream you get from a bakery. It's lovely and light which is dangerous, only because I've polished seen myself devour pretty much a full one.

Step 1

Add your butter or margarine to your mixing bowl along with your caster sugar. Beat these together until they're light and creamy, this can take about 5 minutes or more. The creamier the better. Midway through scrape down the sides of your bowl.
